Fifth (and most desirable) Edition of this seminal work on electricity and its applications (first published 1784), with corrections and additions by William Jones. 8vo: xiv[bound out of sequence],594pp, with six copper-engraved plates. Tall, uncut, wide-margined copy, completely unsophisticated, in original drab grey boards, beige paper spine, printed paper label. An exemplary example, binding square and tight; pages, clean fresh and bright. Wheeler Gift 519b. Adams came from a family of makers of scientific instruments and globes, and was Mathematical Instrument-Maker to His Majesty George III. In the 1780s, he began publishing a series of illustrated texts dealing with the physical sciences. Following close on the heels of Essay on Electricity were Essays on the Microscope (1787), Astronomical and Geographical Essays (1789), Geometrical and Graphical Essays (1791), and Lectures on Natural and Experimental Philosophy (5 vols. 1794). The six engraved plates, including a new frontispiece, contain 105 figures, mostly illustrating various experimental instruments constructed by Adams, often at the request of the king in line with his interest in the practical applications of science. A key gardening text, in which Agricola announced a new method of propagating plants, by grafting twigs to roots of the same species and sealing the graft with a turpentine and pitch plaster he called "vegetable mummy." His text also explains "many Useful Secrets in Nature, for helping the Vegetation of Trees and Plants, and for fertilizing the most Stubborn Soils." The plates, reproduced from first German edition, illustrate Agricola's procedures, which were used by fruit growers for years. Aston, building on the work of J. J. Thomson at Cambridge, developed modern mass spectrograph technology to investigate inconsistencies in the atomic weights of elements, discovering that "the elements are composed of atoms of varying mass, the atomic weight of an element being the average of those atoms comprising it.. [Frederick] Soddy had coined the term isotopes for elements that are ‘homogenous in chemical behaviour'. Thus, for example, no process of chemical analysis will differentiate between thorium, one form of uranium, and ionium, although each has a different atomic weight. Aston carried this investigation one very important stage further by demonstrating that similar conditions occur within the elements themselves [eventually identifying 212 naturally occurring isotopes by analyzing all but three of the non-radioactive elements in the periodic table.]. The ultimate consequences of these discrepancies are far-reaching. The ration between hydrogen and oxygen is not 4:1, as it ‘should be', but rather less; which means that when four atoms of hydrogen are transformed into one helium atom some matter is annihilated. In fact this is an example of the interchangeability between mass and energy which is postulated in Einstein's General Theory of Relativity" (PMM 412). Aston's "work on isotopes also led to his formulation of the whole number rule which states that 'the mass of the oxygen isotope being defined [as 16], all the other isotopes have masses that are very nearly whole numbers,' a rule that was used extensively in the development of nuclear energy." Beautifully preserved early printing, in original wrappers, of this rarity on the nature of hurricanes. Crown 8vo (180 x 119mm): viii,59,[5]pp, with lithographic frontispiece and diagrams in the text. Original blue paper wrappers, cream-colored paper label printed in black to front cover, old blue stamp to corner of title page: "Navigationskolan i Helsingfors" (Helsinki Navigation School). A superb survival, securely bound and clean throughout (virtually pristine). Originally published in 1853. Becher, fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and the Royal Astronomical Society, was a naval commander, hydrographer, and cartographer. Here he uses first hand accounts, with precise meteorological data, to explain the physics and mathematics of hurricanes and suggests precautionary measures to avoid them. He also details ways to ascertain the center and direction of approaching storms and illustrates with a detailed account of a hurricane encountered in the Gulf of Mexico, in 1838, as published in the Nautical Magazine, which he founded and edited. Paris, E. F. D'Allignan, 1919. Illustrated Wrappers. One of 300 numbered copies on Rives à la forme, from a limited edition of 347, of Belot's fourth book. Text in French. 8vo (285 X 210mm): [68]pp on double-fold sheets, divided into seven sections and profusely illustrated with woodcuts in black and illuminated drop caps in bistre. Original wrappers, upper cover repeating the title woodcut with pochoir coloring. An exemplary copy, clean and bright throughout. Belot was age 28 when he exhibited for the first time at Paris's Salon des Indépendants in 1910, the year of the "ignorant geometers, reducing the human body . to pallid cubes" (from Louis Vauxcelles's review). Also hanging in the hall were works by Matisse, Vlaminck, Dufy, and Henri Rousseau, who exhibited his magnificent "The Dream." Gleizes showed Portrait de René Arcos and L'Arbre, paintings that emphasized simplified geometric forms, and Metzinger hung the Portrait of Apollinaire, which, according to Apollinaire, was the "first Cubist portrait." In his Dictionnaire biographique des artistes contemporains (pp. 102-04), Édouard-Joseph calls Belot "undoubtedly the most admirable technician of wood engraving that exists today. in all respects comparable to the master craftsmen of the Middle Ages."
