 ASTON, F[rancis]. W[illiam]., 1877-1945, Isotopes
ASTON, F[rancis]. W[illiam]., 1877-1945
Isotopes
London, Edward Arnold, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. First Impression of Aston's key work on isotopes, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1922. 8vo: viii,152pp, with 4 halftone plates and numerous tables and line drawings in the text. Publisher's original dark blue cloth, covers paneled in blind, spine lettered in gilt. A beautiful copy, uncommon in such nice condition. Fine, except for light offsetting to end papers and slightly bumped spine ends. Appears unread. Judging from auction records, never issued in dust jacket. Norman 77. PMM 412. Gillispie, pp. 320-22. Aston, building on the work of J. J. Thomson at Cambridge, developed modern mass spectrograph technology to investigate inconsistencies in the atomic weights of elements, discovering that "the elements are composed of atoms of varying mass, the atomic weight of an element being the average of those atoms comprising it.. [Frederick] Soddy had coined the term isotopes for elements that are ‘homogenous in chemical behaviour'. Thus, for example, no process of chemical analysis will differentiate between thorium, one form of uranium, and ionium, although each has a different atomic weight. Aston carried this investigation one very important stage further by demonstrating that similar conditions occur within the elements themselves [eventually identifying 212 naturally occurring isotopes by analyzing all but three of the non-radioactive elements in the periodic table.]. The ultimate consequences of these discrepancies are far-reaching. The ration between hydrogen and oxygen is not 4:1, as it ‘should be', but rather less; which means that when four atoms of hydrogen are transformed into one helium atom some matter is annihilated. In fact this is an example of the interchangeability between mass and energy which is postulated in Einstein's General Theory of Relativity" (PMM 412). Aston's "work on isotopes also led to his formulation of the whole number rule which states that 'the mass of the oxygen isotope being defined [as 16], all the other isotopes have masses that are very nearly whole numbers,' a rule that was used extensively in the development of nuclear energy." (ODNB) "Aston's achievements were kept continually before the scientific public by revised editions of his excellent book Isotopes. The included . a clear forecast of the power and dangers of harnassed atomic energy." (Gillispie) N. B. [American Indians] Travels Through North and South Carolina, Georgia, East and West Florida, the Cherokee Country, the Extensive Territories of the Muscogulges or Creek Confederacy, and the Country of the Chactaws. Containing an Account of the Soil and Natural Productions of Those Regions; Together with Observations on the Manners of the Indians. Embellished with Copper-Plates. By William Bartram
London, reprinted for J. Johnson, in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1794. Three-Quarter Calf. Styled on title page "Second Edition in London" (although only the title page differs from the first London edition, according to Sabin, and indeed, in our copy, is on heavier stock) of this classic account of natural history and exploration, including much on southern Indian tribes. Crown 8vo (203 x 120mm): xxiv,520,[8index & binding directions]pp, with engraved frontispiece portrait of Mico Chlucco (from Bartram's own drawing), seven numbered natural history plates (one folding), and folding map (showing eastern coast of Florida from the River St. John to near Cape Canaveral). Beautifully bound in period-style three-quarter tan calf over marbled boards (c. 1900, judging from supplied end sheets), spine in six richly gilt compartments divided by raised bands, black morocco lettering piece gilt, gilded top edge, marbled end sheets. Small edge chip to frontispiece (far from image), else superb, tightly bound, fresh and bright, pages and plates virtually pristine. Howes B223. Sabin 3870 (Unequalled for the vivid picturesqueness of its descriptions of nature, scenery, and productions). Pilling (Proof-Sheets) 305. Field, p. 24 (Although more especially a naturalist, he [Bartram] neglected nothing which would add to the common stock of human knowledge). Clark (Old South) I:197. Servies I, 696. Geology Emerging 134 (citing first London edition). In 1772, John Fothergill, London physician and plant collector, commissioned Bartram to explore the Florida territories, collecting seeds, making drawings, and gathering specimens of unfamiliar plants. Between 1774 and 1776, Bartram sent Fothergill 59 drawings and 209 dried specimens, as well as reports of his travels (not this book, and published only after Bartram's death). Bartram's Travels was originally issued by subscription in Philadelphia, in 1791, by James and Johnson, with George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson among its subscribers. London editions followed in 1792 and 1794 (with 1793 editions in Dublin, Berlin, and Vienna). "Bartram's narrative passages, which variously detail a lively battle with preying alligators, countless river crossings, fantastic reports of the storms he weathered, and his numerous encounters with American Indians, are interspersed with catalogs of birds, flowers, trees, and shrubs by their scientific classifications. Interestingly, the long-term significance of Bartram's work . principally rests in its literary contributions. Bartram's Travels profoundly influenced English Romantic poets such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth (who owned this second London edition) as well as the American Transcendentalists Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau." (DocSouth) By his own account, Coleridge had Bartram's Travels in mind when he devised the exotic imagery in "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "Kubla Khan." N. B. Oxoniæ [Oxford], e theatro Sheldoniano, 1745. First Edition thus. Quarter-Calf. Two works bound in one, each with half-title and title page, registration, and pagination. Text in Latin (an English translation, in octavo, appeared in 1774). 4to: [12],138,[4]; [4],164pp, with 16 plates (including seven folding and one double-page) and four vignettes. Modern calf-backed brown linen, spine in six compartments divided by raised bands, second compartment titled direct in gilt, tan end papers (renewed). A spectacular, wide-margined (perhaps large paper) copy, crisp and clean throughout, with strong impressions of the plates. Anderson (British Topography), p. 145. Upcott I, pp. 429-30. Lowndes, p. 130 ("an elegant posthumous discourse"). Cox III, p. 469. These two works, beautifully illustrated, together represent the span of Battely's historical interests, ranging geographically from Suffolk to Kent. The first work, 'Antiquitates Rutupinæ,' a consideration of the Roman antiquities and ancient stations of Thanet, and Richborough (Rutupiae), in Kent, is cast as a series of four dialogues between Battely and Henry Wharton and Henry Maurice, two fellow chaplains at Lambeth Palace. This Second Edition was edited by the author's nephew Oliver Battely. John Battely had readied for publication the second work, his projected history of the Abbey of St. Edmundsbury, only as far as the death of Henry III, in 1272, at his death in 1708. It was finally published, with an appendix and a list of the abbots provided by Sir James Burroughs, again by Battley's nephew Oliver, in 1745, in this edition. N. B. Also hanging in the hall were works by Matisse, Vlaminck, Dufy, and Henri Rousseau, who exhibited his magnificent "The Dream." BERGER, John (1926-1917), Ways of Seeing
BERGER, John (1926-1917)
Ways of Seeing
Harmondsworth & London, British Broadcasting Corporation & Penguin Books, 1972. Stiff Wrappers. Scarce true First Edition ("First published 1972) of this provocative art history text, based on the BBC television series. The first hardcover edition, published in New York, appeared only the following year. Crown 8vo (195 x 129mm): 170pp, with numerous illustrations. Publisher's off-white stiff card wrappers printed in black and priced 60p. Tightly bound (lightly read, if at all) and clean throughout, a superior example of a fragile book. Ways of Seeing, Berger's influential art text, was initially conceived as a series of four television episodes "The series was ground-breaking in its use of the TV format to introduce aspects of a materialist analysis of art to a non-specialist audience. The book of the series was constructed in a similar spirit of popular pedagogy and subsequently became a key introductory text in art colleges in Britain and the USA. Among the topics discussed in the book are the relationship between oil painting and private property, the sexual politics of the nude, the rhetoric of advertising images, and the impact on art of mechanical reproduction. The book's account of the nude has been particularly influential and the analysis of spectatorship and the male gaze on which it is based has since been developed and extended by feminist critics." While in London, in 1705, Robert Beverley wrote and published The History and Present State of Virginia, one of the earliest printed English-language histories about North America by an author born there. Beverley was a scion of Virginia's planter elite, at odds with royal governors in the colony. As a native-born American—most famously claiming "I am an Indian"—he provided English readers with the first thoroughgoing account of the province's past, natural history, Indians, and current politics and society. Sabin calls Beverley the "best authority," affording the "most vivid, comprehensive, instructive, and entertaining picture of Virginia at the date of his writing." N. B.
